Xiaomi is growing rapidly.
According to market research firm Omdia on the 30th, in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of this year, Xiaomi showed the largest growth rate among the top five companies, surpassing Apple to rank second for the first time.

Xiaomi recorded shipments of 49.9 million units in the second quarter of this year, taking the second place in the global smartphone market with a market share of 17%.
Samsung Electronics took first place with a market share of 19%. Samsung Electronics recorded shipments of 57.3 million units.

Apple shipped 42.9 million units and took third place with a 14% market share. In the previous quarter and the same period of the previous year, it ranked second after Samsung Electronics, but fell behind Xiaomi for the first time in the second quarter of this year.
4th, 5th and 6th places were all occupied by Chinese companies. Oppo (11%), with shipments of 32.5 million units, took fourth place, and Vivo (11%) with shipments of 31.6 million units took fifth place.
Huawei ranked first in the global smartphone market with a 20% market share in the second quarter of last year, but fell sharply to the eighth place (3%) in the second quarter of this year due to U.S. sanctions.

The difference in market share between Samsung Electronics and Xiaomi was only 2 percentage points. In the previous quarter, the difference in market share between Samsung Electronics and Xiaomi was 8 percentage points, and the difference in market share in the same period last year was 9 percentage points, and the gap markedly narrowed in the second quarter of this year.

Xiaomi showed the highest growth rate compared to the same period last year among the top five companies. In the second quarter of this year, Xiaomi grew 72.9% compared to the same period last year, while Samsung Electronics, which ranked first, grew only 5.6%. Apple, in third place, grew 7.5%.
In addition, Xiaomi was the only one among the top five companies to grow QoQ. Samsung Electronics, Apple, Oppo, and Vivo all recorded negative growth rates compared to the previous quarter, but Xiaomi alone showed a 0.8% growth rate.

Omdia said, "In the case of Samsung Electronics, the lack of supply of major parts and the reduction of factory operations in India and Vietnam had a major impact on shipments." It was relatively small compared to Samsung Electronics, and the major reason for the increase in shipments in the second quarter was a significant increase in sales outside of Asia-Pacific, where the spread of the corona virus was severe."
In its second quarter earnings conference call on the 29th, Samsung Electronics said that the Vietnamese plant is expected to be able to operate normally within July, and the Indian plant currently has no production issues due to the impact of Corona.

Meanwhile, in the global smartphone market in the first half of this year, Samsung Electronics (20%), Xiaomi (15%), and Apple (15%) were ranked in the order of market share. In the first half of last year, Xiaomi had a 10 percentage point difference in market share with Samsung Electronics, but this year it narrowed to 5 percentage points.
In the second quarter of this year, the global smartphone market was 299.1 million units, up 6.9% from the same period of the previous year, and down 15.2% from the previous quarter. In the first half of this year, the global smartphone market grew 17.4% year-on-year to 651.8 million units.
